Vicky Barranguet (b. 1973, Montevideo, Uruguay) is a New York-based artist known for her dynamic and vibrant abstract paintings. Since relocating to New York in 1997, Barranguet has developed a distinctive style within the field of abstract expressionism, characterized by intense color, gestural energy, and a deep connection to music, particularly jazz. Her work embodies a fusion of spontaneous gestures and structured systems, reflecting her unique approach to improvisation and pictorial investigation.
Barranguet’s artistic practice explores the interplay between emotion and structure, using large canvases to capture the rhythm and energy of both personal expression and the urban environment. Drawing from her studies with renowned painters Larry Poons and William Scharf at the Art Students League in New York, Barranguet’s work is marked by an ongoing exploration of form, color, and composition, evolving from spontaneous gestures to intricate systems.
Influenced by the cosmopolitan energy of New York and the transformative power of music, Barranguet’s paintings create an immersive experience that resonates with emotional intensity and intricate beauty. Through her empirical and improvisational approach, she continues to push the boundaries of abstract expressionism, positioning her work at the intersection of color, form, and emotional depth.
Barranguet’s work has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums, both in the U.S. and internationally, further establishing her as a significant voice in contemporary abstract painting.
