Artemisa Gallery is proud to present Threads Unveiled a solo show of mixed media photographs by Argentine artist Pablo Boneu.
Working with the material of thread, Boneu crosses the mediums of photography, sculpture, and hand crafted textile work. A double tension is created where Boneu juxtaposes the idea of production as serial repetition of the same object, and the artist’s hand as an artisan fetish. Woven threads fall outside the frame, allowing the depth of the image to come alive in a full sensory experience where deep penetration of the image is required in order to reveal what the background conceals.
In Boneu’s most recent photographic series, the artist layers four images, creating a dialogue where the viewing experience evolves at each angle and perspective. “Sometimes fixed at the ends, sometimes loose, the threads of the warp transmit the sensation of instability in Boneu’s works: whether a strong wind or a soft caress of the hand, whether because we see the work sideways, or because the artist himself has separated the threads, the surface of the image appears to become fragile, variable, penetrable” – Laura Gonzales.
Upon closer investigation of each work, it becomes evident that there is more that lies behind the frontal photograph. The artist adds random elements to each photographic layer in an attempt to confuse and challenge the viewer. Faced with a sense of unease, we construct a narrative and formulate our own answers as a result of our own human inability to tolerate uncertainty.
